The venues are now confirmed and they will be Lundin Links on Tuesday 18th, Crail’s Craighead Course on Wednesday 19th, Scotscraig on Thursday 20th with the Final Day’s play hosted by Kingsbarns on Friday 21st.
The format of the Tournament will take the same format as The Social Media Open and The Social Media Links Challenge. It will be a Pairs event so Teams of 2, the Format for all 4 days being as follows – both scores to count on holes 9 & 18 with 1 score to count on the rest (1-8, 10-17). 3/4 Handicap apply.
The venue for Day 1 on Tuesday 18th October, Lundin Links, was founded on the 8th May, 1868. In that year the Leven Clubs had extended their links from the Mile Dyke eastwards towards Lundin Links. This extended course occupied the narrow strip of land lying between the railway line and the Firth of Forth. It is a challenging links course and a fine test of golf, it offers some of the finest examples of links golf in Scotland and for many years has been a worthy participant in the Final Qualifying stages of The Open prior to its staging at St. Andrews (source – Lundin Links website).
Crail’s Craighead Course, venue for Day 2 of Social Media Open Scotland, was opened in 1998 and achieved almost immediate recognition when The R&A held the World Junior Open there in 2000. The recognition of its quality has continued, with both the Scotland v. Spain International hosted there in 2006 and the Seniors’ Home Internationals in 2010. From 2011 the Battle Trophy has been played annually over the course as a World Counting Event and in 2013 the prestigious Scottish Amateur Team Championships was also played over Craighead. The Craighead course, which is set at Crail Golfing Society and dates back to 1768 makes it the 7th Oldest Golf Club in the World (source – Crail Golfing Society website).
Venue for Day 3, Scotscraig Golf Club, was founded in 1817 by some members of the St. Andrews Society of Golfers (later to become The Royal and Ancient Golf Club) who wished to play more golf than the Society’s occasional meetings afforded them. From the early 1800s to the modern day, Scotscraig Golf Club has been graced by the visit of some of the greats of the game – Braid, Locke, Nicklaus, Norman but to name a few! Over the past 20 years it has also played host to many Open Championship Qualifying events. Scotscraig has a rich history and is the 13th oldest golf club in the World and will be celebrating its bi-centenary in 2017! (source – Scotscraig Golf Club website)
The Inaugural Social Media Open Scotland will culminate on Friday 21st October with the Final Day’s play at the awesome Kingsbarns Golf Links! While golf has been enjoyed over the links land of Kingsbarns beginning in 1793 it was not until the dawn of the 21st century that golf was truly resurrected there. Kingbarns is the only Scottish course to be built on links land in over 70 years and with its seaside setting it has joined the great old courses of nearby St Andrews and Carnoustie, bringing with it a new dimension to the traditional Scottish game. It will be a fitting finale to a great few days of golf & craic in Scotland! (source – Kingsbarns Golf Links website)
