Experience Ireland Golf & Travel Invitational 2017

Experience Ireland Golf & Travel (EIGT), hosted its Inaugural EIGT Invitational Day at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club on Friday 3rd November 2017.

Nearly 80 golfers, from all over the Irish Tourism Industry and further afield, took part on the day, in glorious sunshine beside the beautiful lakes of Killarney. A 12pm Shotgun Start got all the golfers on the course at the same time and many of them made the most of the fantastic weather and great condition of the Killeen Course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club in posting some superb scores on the day.

Following the golf, there was a Craft Beer Tasting with Carlow Brewing Company while Halewood Wines & Spirits were on hand to give the attendees some of the finest whiskeys & gins to sample. Dinner was provided by the new caterers at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club – Geraldine, David & Team – which went down a treat after a great day’s golf. The Inaugural Winners of The EIGT Invitational were representing Killeen House Hotel, in the form of Stephen Foley & Derek Kelly who shot 47 points on the day. They went away with a Motocaddy Golf Bag each plus The Invitational Shield and hats from The Caddy Guy Ireland – a fantastic haul!

Derek Kelly (representing Killeen House) picking up the Winners Prizes

The Carlow Brewing team came 2nd on 44 pts, on the countback from Mount Wolseley (Eamonn O’Donnell & Michael White) who finished 3rd on the same score. The 43s were next – Trump Doonbeg (Kevin Kenny & Michael) were 4th while the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club team consisting of Lady Captain Sheila Crowley and outgoing President Breda Duggan. Derek Kelly also picked up the Nearest the Pin prize while Jason O’Leary from Dromoland claimed the Longest Drive with one of the final tee shots of the day on Killeen’s 18th Hole.

The feedback was fantastic from the golfers, both about the condition of the golf course and also the meal served afterwards. Of course, Experience Ireland Golf & Travel were also commended on somehow organising a summer’s day in November!!

Alice Thompson and Tom Kennedy of EIGT both spoke about the company and its plan for the future, including its 2018 Tournaments of which there are 4 – The Social Media Open in April, Social Media Parkland Championship in June, Social Media Open North in July and Social Media Links Challenge in August.

Alice Thompson of EIGT told us “It was great to have such a tremendous turnout on the day, and the support was greatly appreciated, especially in the off season for a lot of people. We hope to make it an Annual Tournament in the future! Many thanks as well to Cormac Flannery, Aoife Nolan, Geraldine and David McCarthy and all the Team at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club for their support in putting the Event together. Big thanks also to our Invitational Tournament Partners – Motocaddy, The Brand Geeks, Carlow Brewing Company, Halewood Wines & Spirits, Elite Events, Krave, Mount Wolseley, The Caddy Guy Ireland – for adding that little extra to The Inaugural Experience Ireland Golf & Travel Invitational!! Social Media Open 2018

The Social Media Open has been going since 2013 at some of the finest golf courses in Ireland – Adare GC, Ballybunion, Castlemartyr, Dooks, Doonbeg, Mount Juliet, Old Head and Tralee. You can check out details of our previous tournaments below via the following links – Inaugural Social Media Open2014 Social Media Open2015 Social Media Open; 2016 Social Media Open & 2017 Social Media Open.

The Social Media Open returns again next April for its 6th Annual Tournament! The venues of 2016 & 2017 return once more as well – namely, The Old & Cashen Course at Ballybunion Golf Club, along with Dooks Golf Links and Tralee Golf Links to make up 4 fabulous tests of golf. The dates for the Event will be Tuesday 24th – Friday 27th April 2018.

Day 1 of The 2018 Social Media Open will involve a 2-course start at the Cashen Course & Old Course at Ballybunion Golf Club on Tuesday 24th April with half the field playing on the Cashen and the other half taking on the Old Course for the 1st Round. The Cashen Course, opened in 1982 and designed by renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, requires acute precision especially off the tee as fairways frequently disappear around corners. The careless tee shots can easily run out of fairway and find their golf ball buried in the marram grass, hopefully there won’t be many of them next April! The BallyB website puts it well in that “if the Cashen Course at Ballybunion Golf Club was anywhere else it would attract far more attention and plaudits than it does. It’s hard on a girl if her older sister is Sophia Loren!”

The 2nd Day of The 2018 Social Media Open will again involve a 2-course start taking in the World famous Old Course and Cashen Course at Ballybunion Golf Club on Wednesday 26th April. The famous English golf writer, Peter Dobereiner said of BallyB’s Old Course: “If sheer pleasure is the yardstick, then Ballybunion’s Old Course gets my vote as the No. 1 in the world”. According to Ivan Morris’ editorial on the Ballybunion GC website, “by the mid-1970s, there was a growing trickle of well-read, international visitors that overnight turned into a flood in 1982 when Tom Watson made his famous off the cuff eulogy after accepting the Claret Jug at Royal Troon: ‘Nobody can call himself a golfer until he has played at Ballybunion; you would think the game originated there!’ Ever since, the North Kerry links has been one of the most lucrative and recognizable brands in world golf. Knowledgeable golfers realize that if they haven’t played golf at Ballybunion their golfing education is gravely incomplete”.

The 3rd Round of The 2018 Social Media Open takes us back to Dooks Golf Links in Glenbeigh. This beautifully located links course was a favourite of many a team last April and it promises to present a great golfing test once more along with the now famous Dooks welcome! Also known for its narrow links fairways and well contoured greens, you will get a real taste of traditional links golf at its very best. The west Kerry scenery and a scattering of gorse, heather and wild flowers will go down a treat as well. Dooks has been welcoming golfers since 1889 and the course has gone from strength to strength each year, we are very much looking forward to returning here on Thursday 26th April!

The Final Round of The 2018 Social Media Open will once again take place at the tremendous Tralee Golf Links on Friday 27th April! Course designer, Arnold Palmer, claims credit for the front 9 but has always maintained that “God designed the back 9”, unfortunately for all golf fans Mr Palmer has now passed on but we can luckily still enjoy his amazing work in County Kerry. Tralee Golf Links only opened in 1984 but has been getting rave review ever since, as PGA Tour player Kevin Stadler attests to…. “My favourite courses are Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Tralee Golf Club”. Not bad company eh! Beautiful views of Kerry’s picturesque surrounds and beaches are the perfect backdrop and the sounds of the Atlantic Ocean make up an ideal soundtrack to bring the curtain down on what we promise will be another excellent week of craic, with a bit of golf in between!!

Defending 2017 Champs – Jim Dunne & John Howard

The format for the Event will continue as in previous years – Team of 2 with both scores on holes 9 & 18 and 1 score to count on the other holes each (3/4 Handicaps apply) – while the Tournament packages are as follows:

  • Golf Only – €670 per Team of 2 (€335 per person)
  • Play & Stay – €1,150 per Team of 2 (€575 per person, includes 4 nights’ accommodation – 1 night in Ballybunion & 3 nights in Killarney – and Prize Giving Dinner in Killarney, Venue TBC)

Other2013-12-10-21-59-27 Packages available on Request – Contact Us for details.

Along with the great golf and awesome accommodation there will also be some “social gatherings” organised over the course of the few days, always something to look forward to post-round! We are looking forward to another great few days of golf & craic in the South West of Ireland and hope you can join us next April! If you have any queries regarding The 2018 Social Media Open please email smopen@tomkennedygolf.com or call +353-87-6453537.

Social Media Parkland Championship

The Inaugural Social Media Parkland Championship comes to Ireland in 2018 with Woodbrook Golf Club, Powerscourt East & West courses providing 3 fantastic tests of golf over 3 days – Thursday 14th to Saturday 16th June (US Open week)! It’s been a while since we had a parkland course as part of our Events so it is great to get some golf in on 3 of the finest parkland courses in the country.

Day 1 will take us to Woodbrook Golf Club in County Wicklow on Thursday 14th June 2018. Although a flat course, the wind plays a most significant role at Woodbrook. When it blows from the North, 9 holes are affected, including 3 out of the last 4 which will make it a great closing stretch of holes for the Opening Round. When it’s from the South, the 10th plus the par three 11th, and the par five – 12th, 14th and 16th, all become very difficult long holes. A crosswind from the East affects almost every hole on the course and calls for shot making of the highest calibre. With its configuration of five par threes and five par fives, Woodbrook’s layout is unusual but, in the opinion of those who have played there, it is a championship course in every meaning of the word. We are very much looking forward to having Woodbrook host the Opening Round of #SMParkland in June next year!

Round 2 of #SMParkland takes us to Powerscourt’s East course on Friday 15th June 2018. “The East” was designed by successful Walker Cup Captain Peter McEvoy and it is enjoyed by members, corporate clients, societies, visitors and guests alike. It has hosted the 1998 Irish PGA which three time major winner Padraig Harrington won in a playoff. The East course also hosted the 2001 Irish Seniors Open. The course is maintained phenomenally and has some of the best greens in Ireland.

The Final Round of the #SMParkland Championship will be hosted at Powerscourt’s West course on Saturday 16th June 2018. “The West” was designed by David McLayy Kidd (of Bandon Dunes fame!) and his experience and detail for creating a challenging, rewarding and highly enjoyable golf course comes to the fore here at Powerscourt. The beautiful scenery and the greens from the West course can be heard talked about in the clubhouse all evening long from golfers who want a second chance at it. At the end of 54 holes The Inaugural Champions will have well and truly earned their triumph!

The Format for our Inaugural Tournament will be Pairs so Team of 2. Both scores are to count on 9 & 18 while 1 score is to count on holes 1-8 & 10-17, 3/4 Handicaps Apply with Stableford scoring.

Our Tournament Packages are as follows with accommodation available at the picturesque Parkview Hotel which is just 15 minutes away from all 3 courses!

  • Golf Only – €298 per Team of 2 / €149 per person
  • 2 night Play & Stay – €538 per Team of 2 / €269 per person sharing B&B
  • 3 night Play & Stay – €658 per Team of 2 / €329 per person sharing B&B
  • 4 night Play & Stay – €768 per Team of 2 / €384 per person sharing B&B

We will also be arranging some social “meet-ups” each Evening including the possibility of a Prize Giving Barbeque / US Open Night on Saturday 16th June 2018 at Powerscourt, stay tuned for details of this! If you would like to enter a Team please call +353-87-6453537 or email Tom Kennedy at Experience Ireland Golf & Travel. We look forward to seeing you in June for The Inaugural Social Media Parkland Championship!

Social Media Open North

The Inaugural Social Media Open North will come to Donegal in July 2018 with Narin & Portnoo, Donegal Golf Club and Portsalon GC providing a considerable golfing test for 3 days from Thursday 19th – Saturday 21st July (Open Championship Week)!

Narin & Portnoo is a gem of a links course with amazing views surrounding the golf course from all angles. The County Donegal course will be the venue for Day 1 of #SMOpenNorth on Thursday 19th July 2018. The course is situated in a beautiful seaside resort in southwest Donegal and is considered one of the finest natural and scenic 18-hole links courses in Ireland, with sweeping views of Gweebarra Bay. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you from Daragh Lyons, PGA Professional, and his Team and we are very much looking forward to beginning our Inaugural Tournament at Narin & Portnoo next July!

Day 2 will be hosted at the delightful Donegal Golf Club, or “Murvagh” as it better know by the locals! We will be here on Friday 20th July 2018 for #SMOpenNorth “Moving Day”! The course was built on a promontory of 182 acres that extends out into the Atlantic Ocean. The land was inhabited in past centuries due to the land being of geological significance. The course is a par-73 for both ladies & gents and consists of five Par 5’s, four Par 3’s and nine Par 4’s, stretching over 7400 yards from the tips, with five regulation tees from each hole, plus a beginner tee. The outside loop plays along the dunes and the ocean, providing stunning views of the surrounding area.

The Final Day of The Inaugural Social Media Open North will take place at the picturesque Portsalon Golf Club on Saturday 21st July 2018! As the contenders for The Open Championship will be trying to make their move at Carnoustie the teams at #SMOpenNorth will also be trying to claim the trophy on this beautiful links course in County Donegal! Portsalon Golf Club was founded by Colonel B.J Barton in 1891. The course was designed by Charles Thompson, the Portrush professional. The links quickly earned a reputation as one of the best around and attracted visitors from near and far. In 2000 a major redesign of the links was undertaken under the guidance of renowned architect, Pat Ruddy. He was tasked with upgrading the links to keep pace with the modern game which results in the course being lengthened considerably while 9 completely new holes were added. It will provide a fitting finalé for Social Media Open North!

The Format will be Pairs so Team of 2, both golfers will hit off each tee then picking the best tee shot and playing Better Ball from there! 2 scores are to count on holes 9 & 18 with 1 score to count on holes 1-8 & 10-17, 3/4 Handicaps will Apply.

We have the following Tournament Packages available to you (accommodation on Play & Stay packages will be at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny):

  • Golf Only – €338 per Team of 2 / €169 per person
  • Golf & 2 nights’ B&B – €578 per Team of 2 (€289 per person sharing)
  • Golf & 3 nights’ B&B – €698 per Team of 2 (€349pps)
  • Golf & 4 nights’ B&B – €798 per Team of 2 (€399pps)

If you would like to enter #SMOpenNorth please call +353-87-6453537 or email Tom Kennedy – Event Founder. We hope to see you in Donegal in July next year!

Driving in Ireland when not on the Golf Course!

Narrow roads (some with grass down the middle!); tractors, cows & sheep blocking your way and “they drive on the wrong side of the road over here” too. It’s all a lot of fun driving in Ireland!

There can be quite a few challenges for visitors to Ireland setting out on their to drive on our roads for the first time. City and rural driving have their own unique scenarios and there are strict rules to adhere to if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident with another car. To help ease the stress, here are some tips to keep you safe and ensure you have an enjoyable stay in the country.

City Driving
City driving is where everyone is in rush, but no one is going anywhere fast. Traffic is mostly slow moving at best and can be at crawling pace during peak hours. You need to accept the fact that there is absolutely no point in being in a hurry. Surrender yourself to the pace of traffic and you’ll have a less stressful experience.

Get to know your route beforehand by driving it in the evening at a quitter time. Note where you have to change lanes and familiarise yourself with the road signs and what they mean.

Quite often, people can get lost down one-way systems in towns. If this happens, don’t panic, find somewhere to pull in, park safely and work your route out calmly. If you’re still unsure, ask a local business or Gardaí for directions.
Probably the most important skill you’ll need for city driving is concentration. With buses, vans and lorries all vying for space, your view is very restricted. Expect cars, motorbikes, cyclists and pedestrians engrossed in their smartphones to suddenly appear in front of you. Constantly check all your mirrors and beware car doors opening suddenly.

Rural Driving
While driving in the country is vastly different to the city, it does bring its own set of unique challenges like farm machinery, livestock and narrow winding roads with tight bends.
Driving on a winding narrow country road can be difficult. There is quite a bit of gear changing, braking and steering as you navigate around the bends. Some of these roads may have a speed limit of 80 km per hour, but if you attempt to drive at that speed on these unfamiliar twists and turns, you could quickly end up in a ditch or a hedge. Driving at night can be even more tricky, so drive at a pace that you are comfortable and feel safe with.
On National or N roads, the speed limit can be up to 100 km per hour. Occasionally where there are hard shoulders, drivers will move towards them and slow to let following traffic pass without having to cross into the oncoming lane. This a courtesy and not a rule of the road.

It can be quite frustrating for some country drivers when, all of a sudden, their momentum is slowed right down by a tractor in front. This is to be expected though, so don’t let your frustrations get the better of you. The farmer or tractor driver will usually pull in as soon as he/she finds a space to let you pass, often they’ll wave for you to overtake when they can see that the road ahead is clear. You should also be cautious when you approach a tractor coming the other way as it could be towing a low wide load that may cross into your lane.

Another common obstacle to be expected is livestock. Farmers often drive herds of cows or sheep along roads to bring them to another field or shed. Be patient and wait till the farmer clears them off the road for you before proceeding slowly. You should also be aware of farm animals roaming free. Slow down and pass them with great care and attention.

Other Drivers
It’s important to remember that how you drive can affect other drivers, so always be mindful of the other cars on the road. Don’t tailgate. This is where you drive too close to the car in front of you. Not only are you not allowing enough braking distance, but it’s also extremely distracting for the driver in front.
Always signal your intent. How can other drivers anticipate what you’re going to do if you don’t signal?
Let others merge. When other cars are trying to merge, move over into the outside lane to give them room.
Don’t hog the outside lane. The outside lane on a motorway or duel-carriageway is used for overtaking and is not meant for cruising in.

Monitor your high beams. Don’t use your high beams when there is other traffic on the road as they can cause temporary blindness in other drivers. Unfortunately, not all drivers show due care and consideration to their fellow motorists and their use of the horn can be somewhat overzealous. A common mishap for those starting out on their own is stalling at traffic lights. If this happens to you, ignore the car horns, take a deep breath and go through your starting procedure. Check it is safe to proceed, before driving off calmly.

Accidents and what to do
If you are unlucky enough to be involved in an accident, there are certain things you are required to do by law, and other things you should do for safety and to protect yourself from financial loss. First things first, stop the vehicle – if you are in a dangerous location or obstructing traffic, move the car only so far that it is in a safer location.

When you are in a safe location and at a standstill, turn off the ignition and breathe. A running car can be a safety hazard, turning it off reduces the risk of a fire. Try to remain calm and take a moment for several deep breaths, this will help you better handle the situation. Next, you will need to get out of the car and mark the scene. Flares, cones or reflective markers will make the accident area more visible for other drivers. Check for injuries on yourself and on any other drivers or passengers who may be involved.

Depending on the severity of the accident and if there are any injuries, you may need to call the Gardaí, who will then alert other emergency services if required.  If you are involved in a more minor crash with no injuries, exchange car insurance details with the other driver and take photos on your phone of the accident site as these will help to explain what happened at a later date.

Drive safely and calmly, and you should avoid any mishaps. Happy driving, on and off the golf course!

There’s more to driving than the basics and Ready for the Real Road, from Liberty Insurance, is here to make sure you’re ready for any challenges that you might meet. For more information, visit their Safety Centre and for a quick and easy car insurance quote, visit Liberty Insurance.
